Wise Saying #20

house build by Lord blueprint

Wise Saying #20:

“By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.” (24:3-4)

A happy, prosperous house (or family) is built, established and filled through wisdom, understanding and knowledge. There is no cheating this rule, for there are no shortcuts, or alternatives to the success described here in by the Wiseman. Yet, the focus of this proverb is not the acquisition of “precious and pleasant riches.” Since, as we learned in Saying #7, it is not wise to toil to acquire wealth (23:4-5). Furthermore, we learned in Saying #16 that wisdom is more precious than jewels or fine gold (3:15-18; 8:10-11; 16:16). Our posture toward riches is to always be governed by the priority of pursuing wisdom. Thus, the main point of today’s saying is, the good life is the result of a life steeped in wisdom, understanding and knowledge and it all starts in, “the fear of the Lord” (9:10; cf. Psalm 111:10). So today friends, remember, unless the house is established on the revealed wisdom of the Lord, “those who build it labor in vain” (Psalm 127:1b). Don’t labor in vain.
