Wise Saying #7

chasing flying money

Wise Saying #7:

“Do not wear yourself out to become rich; be wise enough to restrain yourself. When you gaze upon riches, they are gone, for they surely make wings for themselves, and fly off into the sky like an eagle!” (Proverbs 23:4-5 NET)

It is an inherent human trait to seek security in money. Nevertheless, the Wiseman warns us not to expend all of our time, energy and effort trying to get rich because riches are fleeting. To “gaze upon riches” literally is to let one’s eye fly toward it. But wealth itself sprouts wings and flies like an eagle, thus outstripping all attempts to capture it. It’s little wonder then that the apostle says, “Those who long to be rich… stumble into temptation and a trap and many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all evils. Some people in reaching for it have strayed from the faith and stabbed themselves with many pains” (1 Timothy 6:9-11 NET). So today friends, work hard not to enrich yourself, but to bring glory to God. Be content with what you have; trusting the Lord to provide what you need. If you will do this, you will incur the Lord’s rich blessings.
