Wise Saying #16:
“Listen to your father who begot you, and do not despise your mother when she is old. Buy the truth, and sell it not, also wisdom and instruction and understanding. The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice, and he who begets a wise child will delight in him.” (23:22-25)
Since the advent of Rock-n-Roll, every generation for the last sixty years has had an anthem song that preached that youths are right and parents are wrong. (For me it was the Beasty Boys’ Fight For Your Right to Party.) However, the Wiseman calls for us to bring joy to the hearts our parents by listening to their wise counsel; even if they are old to us know it all youths[i]. What is their advice… no matter the cost obtain truth and never relinquish it any price (the same goes for wisdom, instruction and understanding). The Wiseman often speaks of wisdom being more valuable than “jewels” (cf. 3:15-18) and “silver and choice gold” (cf. 8:10-11; 16:16). He talks in these terms because; the eternal wisdom of Heaven will save our souls by teaching us “the fear of the Lord and the knowledge of God” (cf. 2:1-5). It’s no wonder then, our Lord built upon this counsel in His parables of the Hidden Treasure and Pearl of Great Price (ref. Matthew 13:44-46). So the challenge today is to make any sacrifice and to pay any price to obtain godly wisdom and never, no matter what, let it go. Let’s close with a question from our Lord, “What will a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Mark 8:36 NKJV). Sadly for many it is very little. Friend, don’t let that be you. “Buy the truth and sell it not.”
This week’s theme is The Thirty Sayings of the Wiseman.
