Wise Saying #14
“Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the LORD all the day. Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.” (23:17-18)
One of the greatest fears any parent has for their children is that their wise instruction will be undermined by sinfully foolish peers, or bad role models, or eroded by the influence of a godless society. It seems even the Wiseman felt this twinge in his heart. No doubt, the freewheeling lifestyle of the sinner is an attractive temptation for any saint (cf. Psalms 73:1-28). But, no matter how wonderfully carefree their lives may look now; a terrible future awaits them “cut off” from the Lord in judgment. Rather, our only goal in life should be to zealously “continue in the fear of the Lord all the day,” because, as the Wiseman also said, “this is the whole duty of man” (Ecclesiastes 12:13). If we will do this one thing, then we will have a bright, eternal future with our Father in heaven. So today, remember the teaching of the Wiseman, guard your heart from the evil influences of sinners for theirs is a ruinous end. Fear the Lord all your days and He will fulfill your hope for an abundant life both now and in eternity. May God’s riches blessings be upon you.
