When Honey Words Heal

Wise advice to shape your conversations today:

“Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.” (Proverbs 16:24)

You know the old playground rhyme, “Sticks and stones my break my bones but words will never hurt me!”? It may be the classic rebuttal to childish name calling but it is simply not true. Harshly spoken words wound by slicing deep into one’s spirit. Left to fester, verbal cuts will eventually kill. But how sweet is the taste of honeyed words. Gracious expressions of thankfulness, encouragement and love give health and vitality to both the body and soul of the hearer. Remember, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21). So today, choose to give health and life to another by carefully selecting your words; coating them with the sweetness of grace.
