One person wondered how to know if it was God’s will that they change careers. While another wanted to know how to determine if it was God’s will for her to go to college.
While I applaud these two individuals for wanting to align their lives with God’s will. I think these two questions reflect a common misunderstanding about God’s will for our lives. Perhaps much of this comes from a misapplication of Jeremiah 29:11 which begins, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord…” In context, this promise was given to the tribe of Judah as they were going into Babylonian captivity and was fulfilled with the coming of the Messiah.
For many, God’s will is all about living in the right set of circumstances. That is, God has a celestial plan for their life, if only they could just figure out His plan. It’s as if God’s will is an enigma that needs to be deciphered in order to have a happy and fulfilling life.
However, living out God’s will for your life is so much simpler. In fact God’s will is about being the right kind of person, rather than living in the right set of circumstances. Let me illustrate with a few verses:
“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality…” (1 Thessalonians 4:3)
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)
“For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.” (1 Peter 2:15)
We could have looked at other passages but these three prove the point. Did you see it? God’s will for your life is about being the right kind of person and not about living in right set of circumstances. Honestly, you could have the right set of circumstances but be the wrong kind of person and then what good would that do you?
God’s will is plain and simple. My hope is that you will explore His word to learn more about being the right kind of person He has called you to be.
