Yesterday on a local talk radio show one caller lamented, “What is our country coming too that kids would kill for the thrill of it.” The caller and host went on to discuss the gun culture, violent video games, and even the high unemployment among black teens. However, these are but symptoms of the real problem, sin.
Why is sin the problem? Well long before guns, video games and rampant unemployment sin came into the world. In fact, Solomon spoke about the sinful lure of killing for the thrill of it.
“My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent. If they say, ‘Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood; let us ambush the innocent without reason; like Sheol let us swallow them alive, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; we shall find all precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder; throw in your lot among us; we will all have one purse’– my son, do not walk in the way with them; hold back your foot from their paths, for their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.” (Proverbs 1:10-16)
Until we address the problem of sin; banning guns, curbing video games and getting folks jobs, or anything else we might think up, will not cure what ails our country.
Only Jesus Christ, the one who came to set us free from the controlling influences and consequences of sin, can save us from ourselves (ref. Romans 6:1-23).
