Our Lord said,
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35)
I just received a phone call from an older lady here in town who called to say thank you for the love and support the congregation at Lanton has shown her son. She went on to say how impressed she was by how everyone has rallied around him and his children during this trying time in his life. She also commented that her son has never had this kind of love and support in his life. It’s my prayer that her son’s experience will move her to seek out the love of God and His people.
On the flip side, I talked to a very sick man yesterday who knows the truth but abandoned it long ago because people who called themselves Christians didn’t live out the Lord’s teaching on loving one another. He witnessed fights among brethren and congregational splits based on personalities and not a stand for the truth. Consequently, he refused to see me saying, “When I’m good and ready I’ll call you.” My prayer for him is that the Lord will stir within his heart before it’s too late.
My friends, never forget that people are watching you; watching to see how you live out the Lord’s teaching. May we be lights to the world, reflecting the love of our Lord by drawing people to Him, not driving them away. May the words of the old hymn be a constant reminder of our Lord’s teaching, “And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love, and they’ll know we are Christians by our love.”
